What is GOTS?
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is an international labeling scheme for organic textiles. The labeling scheme requires that a minimum of 70 per cent of the fibers must be organically grown, and that the textiles must meet environmental and health requirements throughout the entire production process. Social criteria and safety for workers are also included in the requirements.
GOTS covers all stages of production, i.e. processing, production, chemical use, water consumption, waste, packaging, labelling, distribution and sale. Makes demands that dyes are biodegradable and non-toxic, that the finished product does not contain allergens or residues of dangerous chemicals. GOTS also sets requirements for social responsibility and safety for the workers, such as HMS requirements, the right to minimum wage, overtime work, discrimination and much more. Conventional cultivation of natural fibers such as cotton requires large amounts of environmentally toxic pesticides. Choosing organic and GOTS-certified clothing is an important environmental choice.
